Born in Manitoba, Alan Crawley was admitted as a barrister and solicitor to the Bar of Manitoba in 1912. In addition to practising law he was a member of the Community Players of Winnipeg and developed a keen interest in contemporary poetry. After a serious illness in 1934 which was followed by the sudden and complete loss of sight, Alan Crawley and his wife, Jean Horn, moved to Victoria.
